Service · Respect · Accountability · Excellence · Collaboration · Learning
On behalf of the Astoria Police Department, I want our community to know that our core values are:
Service, Respect, Accountability, Excellence, Collaboration and Learning. Each member of our department is
expected to understand these values and reflect their meaning in their everyday work throughout our
community. We
recognize and value the sanctity of human life, and we believe all persons should be treated
humanely and with dignity.
The Astoria
Police Department is grateful to work with a supportive community that has a high level of trust in
its police department. We are
committed to maintaining the trust of our community by developing a professional, well-trained
department that is responsive to its community's needs; improving collaborative partnerships with
community services; and developing nuanced solutions aim to improve the quality of life for all
members of our community.
Our
screening process for new Police Officer recruits is rigorous. Officers engaging in continuous
training remains a top priority and includes coursework on topics such as the proper use of force,
communications skills and de-escalation techniques.
Our Community Resource Officer focuses specifically on community
livability concerns. The City of Astoria supports this position based on the success
other cities have had when a specific officer was assigned to work on complex issues like disorderly
conduct, derelict vehicles, camping, abandoned property and shopping carts. The goal of the Community
Resource Officer position is provide a dedicated officer that is able to be proactive, ensure continuity
and provide a focused response to community concerns. The Community Service Officer will be
partnering with a Mobile Crisis Clinician from Clatsop
Behavioral Health as part of this response.
We recognize that even isolated incidents of police misconduct anywhere undermine public trust everywhere.
Every day, we strive to improve community relationships, transparency and accountability. We greatly
appreciate both your support and feedback; please use Citizen Feedback Form to share your thoughts with us.
Public safety is an honorable and demanding profession, and I am proud of the men and women who serve and
protect Astoria on a daily basis.
