Tom returned to his beloved hometown of Astoria in 2016 after living and working in Portland, Oregon as a Casual Longshoreman at ILWU Local 8. He currently operates Hanthorn Crab Company and Pier 39 Seafood inside historic Pier 39 in Uppertown.
Tom’s 30 year career as a gillnetter included fishing on Bristol Bay, Alaska, Puget Sound, Washington, San Francisco Bay, California, The Lower Columbia River, and Cook Inlet, Alaska. He worked as a data collector for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Sturgeon Tagging project on the Lower Columbia River, Tillamook Bay, Winchester Bay, and Coos Bay.
Tom is a FisherPoet and he volunteers at the annual FisherPoets Gatherging.
Tom grew up in UnionTown, had a Daily Astorian paper route, and graduated from Astoria High. He attended Clatsop Community College and he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Communications from Portland State University.
