At the September 21, 2020 City Council meeting, Council reaffirmed the City of Astoria's commitment to welcoming and celebrating diversity, equity and inclusion in the community.
RESOLUTION NO. 20-22
A RESOLUTION TO REAFFIRM THE CITY OF ASTORIA'S COMMITMENT TO BEING A COMMUNITY WELCOMING DIVERSITY, EMBRACING EQUITY AND INCLUSION AND WHERE ALL ARE ACCEPTED, VALUED, RESPECTED, AND SAFE
WHEREAS, the City of Astoria is a community which values and is welcoming to people of all races, ethnicities, socioeconomic classes, disabilities, faiths, genders, gender identities and expressions, sexual orientations, and nationalities; and
WHEREAS, our community promotes diversity, equity and inclusion, and values the strength that comes from fostering understanding among different individuals, groups, and points of view; and
WHEREAS, our community rejects discrimination, bias or exclusionary acts or policies toward historically marginalized groups, and toward any people based on their age, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, disabilities, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation or nationality; and
WHEREAS, such discrimination harms the health and general welfare of the entire community; and is counter to our belief that all of our residents should be treated with respect and compassion without regard to those characteristics; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the City of Astoria that no person shall be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination in any City program, service, or activity on the basis of these characteristics; and the City also requires its contractors and grantees to comply with this policy; and
WHEREAS, the Astoria City Council seeks, through its policies and actions, to embrace and celebrate diversity, equity, inclusion and mutual respect; and
WHEREAS, the Astoria City Council is committed to protecting the civil and human rights of all community members; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF ASTORIA that the Astoria City Council challenges and encourages all residents and visitors to act at all times in ways consistent with the values of civility, fairness, equity, and justice in our personal, civic and professional lives; in our neighborhoods, and where we work, study, play and worship.
